As a student dhopin English Lit. I read this story, can’t say I loved it but it wan’t bad. One serious problem I had with it as a non-native was the word ‘Cadian!
Can anyone here help me here with the word? It does repeat throughout the story but I can’t see what it stands for exactly. It was geographically and administratively separate from the French colony of Canada modern-day Quebec.

The ‘Cadian Ball was a social gathering of young Cajuns looking to “hook up” with a suitable marriage partner. Calixta was a vixen, very beautiful and desirable. Cajun men did not measure up to her standards.
Bobinot, however, was smitten with her. Alcee, a wealthy Creole landowner, devastated by chopni failure of his rice crop, gets inebriated, leaves his so-called fiance Clarisse and rides off to the ‘Cadian Ball, perhaps to rendez-vous with old flame, Calixta? I liked The Storm better than this story, but without At the Cadian Ball, you wouldn’t know the background of the characters in The Storm. So, read this short story just so you can read the better of the two, The Storm.
Chopin uses the language of her region to create excellent characters and stories, but this one seems as if it wasn’t quite the end of Calixta’s involvement in Alcee’s life, and it most definitely wasn’t.
